Smokey the Bear will celebrate his diamond anniversary as America's longest running Public Service Announcement campaign August 9th at the Straights of Mackinac.

According to the DNR, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and others are gathering to celebrate 75 years of promoting safe use of Michigan and the Nations forests.

Smokey Bear and the fire prevention staff will be on hand from 1 to 3 p.m. at Straits State Park in St. Ignace. There will be a lot of fun for kids with a fire truck open house, fire prevention games, refreshments and a chance to get a selfie with Smokey.

For 75 years Smokey Bear has been the voice and face if you will, of reminding generations the importance of protecting our forests. Since 1947 the phrase "Only you can prevent forest fires" has inspired 5 generations of Michiganders as well as Americans all across the country.
