Lake sturgeon are in the Great Lakes and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service is considering whether to make the fish an endangered or threatened species.

According to WOOD, the U.S.F.W.S. say there is enough information available on lake sturgeon to justify them being studied to see if they should be federally protected.

Lake sturgeon were swimming in the Great Lakes when dinosaurs were still walking the earth. Sturgeon can be found from the Hudson Bay all the way to the southern Mississippi River. They are the largest freshwater fish found in the Great Lakes.

At one time there were millions of sturgeon but over fishing and pollution has been a big factor in the decline of the species over the past 100 years.

So hopefully the scientists get the ok for the study. I sure would hate to see another species of fish go away.
