You know what they say: Everything is better with friends. That includes fighting an evil demonic clown who lives in town sewer system and has an affinity for Victorian era garb. Wardrobe preference notwithstanding, Pennywise is still pretty darn terrifying, especially if you’re already scared of clowns — in which case, you might want to avoid the new trailer for IT.

Studio math might be one part proprietary data and one part alchemy, but here’s something I feel pretty confident saying: when your trailer sets the all-time record for most views in a day, you’re about to make some moolah. We all remember that the first teaser trailer for It had 197 million views in its first 24 hours online, shattering the previous (albeit short-lived) record of 139 million set by The Fate of the Furious. Those would be extraordinary numbers for any movie, but for an unapologetic horror film about a demon clown? Not even the most aggressive Warner Bros. projections could have predicted that.

Horror fans have been waiting for months. Stephen King fans have been waiting for years. And after a week of teasers and sneak peeks, the first trailer for It, Andres Muschietti’s highly-anticipated adaptation of King’s classic horror novel (or one half of it, anyway) is finally here to give us our best look yet at that divisive new take on the iconic evil clown. Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers recently revealed that they once offered to direct the new adaptation of Stephen King’s It, but Warner Bros. politely declined. Instead, they went off and made a Stephen King story of their own with their hit Netflix series. Perhaps returning the shout-out favor, one of the producers behind It is comparing the upcoming film to Stranger Things, thus creating a nostalgia paradox that will inevitably cause the internet to implode.

Those who powered through all eight hours of Netflix’s Stranger Things know the supernatural drama wears many influences on its sleeve, often out-and-out referencing famous Spielberg movies, or even legendary author Stephen King. King heartily seems to approve of the comparison, however, sharing his praise for Stranger Things online.

Cary Fukunaga’s adaptation of Stephen King’s It is one seriously ambitious project, and given the massive size and the generation-spanning scope of the novel, it’s hardly surprising (and even something of a relief) that he’s splitting the story into two films. Fukunaga has a lot of work ahead of him, but most challenging will be the casting of Pennywise the clown, the terrifying entity made famous by Tim Curry in the ‘90s miniseries adaptation. Rest assured that Fukunaga isn’t taking that casting lightly.
