The Grand Roller Rink in Holland Lives on as RollXscape [PHOTOS]
The Grand Roller Rink in Holland lives on! It's got a new name and new ownership.
Holland's Grand Roller Rink is where I skated with my family when I was a kid. We loved it! It was SUCH a big deal to pile in the car on a Saturday morning and head to the Grand Roller Rink.
Since my childhood, the rink had changed hands, becoming "The Rink" in 2009. Facing financial hardships exacerbated by the pandemic, the owners started a fundraising effort and The Rink was even featured on "The Kelly Clarkson Show." Despite attempts to save it, I was sad to see the rink up for sale earlier this year, with the possibility of shutting down for good.
That's ALMOST what happened. According to The Holland Sentinel The Rink was purchased by Ben Fogg of Fogg Filler, a machining manufacturer in Holland Township. They'd planned to turn the space into a warehouse, which was unanimously approved by the planning commission in March 2021. But then, something changed.
The Holland Sentinel reports,
The Fogg family changed its mind after community members expressed their disappointment in the loss of the center.
It would stay a skating rink after all!
"Their family reached out to my family to see if we'd be interested in operating and running it as a skating rink," Timothy Price, co-owner of the skating center, told The Holland Sentinel.
Since then, the building has undergone a huge remodel, with new flooring, paint, and even expanding the skating rink by 22 feet. It's got a new name too! The skating rink is now called RollXscape.
The remodeled skating rink opens to the the public Thursday, October 4, 2021.
The new owners say,
Our goal is to create an atmosphere where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy the act of skating. With that, we are exited to say we plan on many skating activities outside of the normal session times such as skate lessons, adult skate night, and competitive skating teams as well.
RollXscape is open to the public Thursday through Saturday. Check out full hours here.
