Traverse City State Park Campground Closing For More Than a Year
Traverse City State Park, nestled along Grand Traverse Bay in Traverse City, is a popular destination for campers every season.
And while it's great, everything could use a little upgrade every once and a while, right? That's exactly what's happening here.

The park's campground is set to close after the National Cherry Festival (the official closing date is July 7, 2025) and will remain closed through the entirety of the 2026 camping season.
Upgrades and Renovations Coming to Traverse City State Park
The closure is necessary due to an $8.5 million upgrade and renovation project. According to the State of Michigan, the upgrades aim to improve accessibility, amenities, facilities, and more.
- So what can you expect when all is said and done?
- A new, larger entrance to the park/campground.
- A new, more accessible check-in station.
- New park headquarters (that will be in a different location than the current building).
- Removal of the current pedestrian bridge over US-31.
- Addition of a street-level pedestrian crossing with a traffic signal.
- Expansion of the park's sanitation station. (This will be relocated from its current location.)
Not All Parts of Traverse City State Park/Campground Will Close
The good news is that not all parts of the park/campground will be closed. The modern campground will be closed for the duration. It's unclear if the lodge and mini-cabins will remain open.

However, the day-use portion of the park will remain open during construction and will only be closed occasionally when needed.
Is traditional camping not really your style? How about staying in a yurt?
