Trump Team Hit With $200,000 Bill Over Frivolous Michigan Lawsuits
Former President Donald Trump's legal team has been hit with a $200,000 bill over frivolous lawsuits over Michigan's election results.
The lawsuit, brought by the President and his legal team was the last gasp attempt to overturn the state's election results which saw Joe Biden win the popular vote in the state 50.62% to Trump's 47.84%. That result netted the democratic challenger the state's 16 electoral votes.
US District Judge Linda Parker presided over the December lawsuit and dismissed the suit without merit. She also asked that the lawyers be investigated to ascertain if they should lose their law licenses.
Last month Judge Parker ruled that state and local election officials were entitled to be reimbursed for legal fees associated with what she called a 'frivolous lawsuit. In her ruling, she noted the legal team had a duty to investigate their claims more vigorously before filing the lawsuit.
$180,000 has been requested by the City of Detroit, along with an additional $20,000 requested by the Office of Attorney General Dana Nessel.
In making her ruling against the Trump Team, which included Sindey Powell & Lin Wood, she says that the case was an abuse of the legal system:
This lawsuit represents a historic and profound abuse of the judicial process....the case was never about fraud - it was about undermining the People's faith in our democracy and debasing the judicial process to do so.
The former president still faces legal issues in the state, including a lawsuit from the NAACP in Michigan over his attempts to disenfranchise the voters of Wayne County.
