COVID-19 cases have increased around the state of Michigan and are now the reason the University of Michigan won't be playing Maryland this weekend.

WZZM reports that the game won't be rescheduled either. According to the news outlet, the decision to cancel the game and football practices at the University of Michigan comes after the school met with health department officials as well as various medical professionals.

Ward Manuel, who's the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics told WZZM,

“The decision by our medical professionals to stop practices and cancel this Saturday’s game against Maryland was made with the health, safety and welfare of the student-athletes, coaches and staff as our utmost priority. We have seen an increase in the number of student-athletes unavailable to compete due to positive tests and associated contact tracing due to our most recent antigen and PCR testing results.”

WZZM says that student-athletes, as well as coaching staff, are receiving daily COVID-19 tests and those results will determine when the football team can safely resume practices. As of right now, the earliest the team would return to practice would be December 7th, as long as another surge doesn't happen on the campus.
