A new Uber scam is targeting riders and drivers by exploiting Uber’s verification system through fraudulent phone calls impersonating Uber representatives or drivers.

How the Scam Works

After booking a ride, the scammer (posing as a driver) calls or messages the rider often via the official in-app call feature to appear legitimate and claims there’s a new verification policy requiring confirmation of the rider’s account before pickup.

They then ask for the rider’s phone number, email, and a verification code often the one Uber sends for login or authentication purposes.

Once the code is shared, scammers can gain full access to the Uber account, including stored payment methods, and can book fraudulent trips, change settings, or even lock users out of their accounts.

According to Uber’s website, the company “will never call, text or email you to request your password, verification code, or banking details.”

If you’re contacted by someone claiming to be with Uber and asking for sensitive info, you’re advised to end the conversation immediately and report the interaction to Uber through the Help Center.
