The United States Postal Service (USPS) will suspend mail delivery and close post offices nationwide, including in Michigan, on Thursday January 9th, 2025, to honor former President Jimmy Carter’s passing. Also, regular mail services will be unavailable on January 8, affecting residential and business deliveries across Michigan.

This decision aligns with the National Day of Mourning declared by President Joe Biden, a customary observance following the death of a former president.

During a National Day of Mourning, federal government offices and services (such as the USPS) typically cease operations to allow employees to pay their respects. That means federal buildings, the stock market and most relevant- the post office, will all be closed. However- for most Americans, not getting their mail on Thursday will be the most noticeable difference to their day-to-day routine.

This isn't something that is only happening for the passing of President Carter. This tradition exists to reflect our nation’s collective grief and appreciation for the contributions of our departed leaders.

While most federal services will pause, essential operations related to national security and public safety will continue to function. If you're planning to go to the post office this week, make sure you schedule around this closure. This observance offers the nation an opportunity to reflect on President Carter’s legacy and his impact on the country.

President Carter's legacy is truly one of community service and care for his fellow citizens, and if you decide to take the time to honor him on Thursday, I'd suggest finding a way to volunteer or give back to others just like he did with Habitat for Humanity.
