USPS Warns Mailing This in Michigan is More Dangerous than Ever
As the holiday season approaches, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is issuing a critical warning to the public: avoid sending cash or checks through the mail.
This advisory comes amidst a rise of mail theft and fraud, particularly concerning check washing scams that have become increasingly prevalent.
⬇️ How To Avoid The Biggest Scams ⬇️
New reports indicate that criminals are using sophisticated methods to steal mail from USPS drop boxes and residential mailboxes.
One such method involves the use of an "arrow key," a universal tool that allows thieves to open blue USPS collection boxes. Once inside, they can easily access checks and other sensitive financial documents.
Thieves are also targeting home mailboxes, where they can quickly snatch envelopes, often aided by the flag that indicates outgoing mail. The holiday season is particularly lucrative for these criminals, as many people send gifts and monetary gifts via checks.
The USPS has seen a major uptick in these thefts during this time of year, making it so important for you to be vigilant about how you send money and important documents.
Check washing is a specific type of fraud that has gained traction in recent years.
In this scheme, thieves steal checks from the mail and use chemicals to erase the original payee's name and amount. They then rewrite the check with their own information, allowing them to cash in on stolen funds.
The USPS estimates that it recovers around $1 billion in counterfeit checks and money orders annually, highlighting how big of a problem this really is.
How To Protect Yourself From These Scams
To protect against these scams, the USPS recommends several precautions:
Avoid Mailing Checks: If possible, refrain from sending checks altogether.
Consider using electronic payment methods or mobile banking for greater security.
Use Post Office Drop Slots: If mailing checks is unavoidable, deposit them directly at a post office instead of using outdoor drop boxes.
This reduces the risk of theft since these boxes are often targeted after hours.
Mail Timing: Try to deposit your mail before the last pickup of the day.
Avoid leaving outgoing mail in your mailbox overnight or during weekends when thefts are more likely to occur.
Monitor Your Mail: If you’re going to be away from home, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to collect your mail or hold it at the post office until you return.
Scammers and thieves will always try to rip you off but as holiday shopping ramps up and more people consider sending money through traditional means, awareness of these risks are very important.
