Which GR Buildings Are On The List Of Michigan’s ‘Must See’ Buildings?

Three local structures were featured on the list, compiled by the American Institute of Architects.

I think we all probably could guess at least one of the structures, which were featured in Tuesday's USA Today. The 25 Must See Buildings In Michigan included the State Capitol in Lansing, the Port Betsie Lighthouse and the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.

Here are the Grand Rapids buildings included on the list.

The Meyer May House in Heritage Hill routinely makes the lists of important structures in the state because it was designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright during his 'prairie' period. The home at 450 Madison Ave SE. Tours are offered Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Grand Rapids Art Museum building, known affectionately as the GRAM, was also featured on the list. The building was designed by wHY Architecture, and is LEED certified. According to the AIA, the GRAM's "architectural concrete design, daylight elements and central location are works of art on their own."

And the third Grand Rapids 'must see' building on the list is the Van Andel Institute at Michigan and Bostwick on the edge of downtown. The Institute says this about VAI:

The building is set into a steep hill at the beginning of downtown Grand Rapids’ “Medical Mile," and is home to scientists, students and administrative employees. The facility includes windows and glass roof structures that cascade down both sides of the building, providing abundant natural light to several laboratories. The building includes a demonstration lab for visitors to view research in progress and an interactive discovery wall for visitors to learn about the institute’s history, milestones and impact.
