Our Family Loves To Fish in Michigan

My son and I love to fish all around West Michigan. Whether it's a small pond, good size lake, a river, or even Lake Michigan, they are all fair game to us.

Since my son was big enough to hold a fishing pole he has been out on the water trying to catch some fish.

My dad got my son out for his first taste of catching bluegill and from that moment on he was hooked.

A Young Boys Quest To Catch All Michigan Species of Fish

I started my son out fishing for bluegill, perch, and trout, and since then he has moved up to crappie, largemouth, and smallmouth bass.

We were fishing on Croton Pond a few years back on October 1st when he landed a really nice smallmouth bass. Boy what an exciting moment for the young man and me as I talked him through holding his pole up, adjusting his drag, and trying to teach him to not horse the fish in. He and I were the loudest people on the pond that morning when he got his first hog in the boat.

There was still another fish my son wanted to add to his list of fish that he has caught in Michigan.

Young Boy Finally Catches His Dream Fish

My son has been after the elusive Northern Pike ever since he saw me catch one. So for the past few summers and winters, I have tried to get him in front of pike and there have been some close calls.

My son has seen me, his brother, and one of my best friends all catch northern pike while I was trying to help him catch one.

You know how little kids can get disappointed when they are trying to catch one but everyone else seems to have the luck.

Now don't get me wrong, there have been some close calls on the ice and in the boat where he's had pike on but they either break his line or just get off the line.

No, this 25.5-inch northern pike won't win any awards or make the record books, but it will be a fish we will all talk about for the rest of our lives. To me, the only record book that matters is the memory book. Congratulations son.
