Distracted Drivers Watch Out, Police Across Michigan Are Looking For You.

In April, law enforcement agencies across Michigan are partnering with the Office of Highway Safety Planning to crack down on hands-free violations as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The new hands-free law in Michigan, which took effect on June 30, 2023, prohibits drivers from holding or supporting a phone or other electronic device with any part of their hands, arms, or shoulders while operating a vehicle.

Even if a device is mounted, drivers cannot manually use it beyond a single touch.

During the enforcement campaign, officers will be issuing tickets to anyone caught violating the hands-free law. Fines start at $100 for the first offense and can double if the distracted driving causes a crash.

Repeat offenders may also have to complete community service hours or a driving improvement course.

According to state officials, distracted driving is a major safety concern, with over 15,000 crashes involving distracted driving in Michigan in 2022, resulting in more than 50 fatalities.

To encourage safer driving behaviors, the state is urging motorists to use hands-free technology like Bluetooth or built-in vehicle systems, silence notifications, and avoid other distractions like eating, drinking, and personal grooming while behind the wheel.
