The year 2020 was anything but plain, but that doesn't mean that America's taste in ice cream couldn't be. Häagen-Dazs released their Flavor of 2020 report and America has some pretty plain preferences when it comes to ice cream flavors.

The report listed the top 5 flavors preferred by Americans in 2020 and was shared by Red Tricycle:

  1. Vanilla
  2. Coffee
  3. Strawberry
  4. Vanilla Milk Chocolate Almond Bar
  5. Butter Pecan

Ice cream sales have risen during the coronavirus pandemic and the average American has been buying up vanilla ice cream more than any other flavor.  The top flavors changed pretty significantly from 2019, where only Coffee and Strawberry made the top 5:

  1. Coffee
  2. Chocolate Peanut Butter
  3. Rum Raisin
  4. Green Tea
  5. Strawberry

There are a few different reasons why Americans preferred vanilla ice cream more than any other flavor in 2020.  It could be because more Americans are buying ice cream than normal so maybe some of them don't even know what their favorite flavor actually is yet.

Or maybe it is because on average most Americans prefer vanilla, but if you looked at different regions or states that people who have different tastes.  A study done this year shows that vanilla was the favorite in the most states, but the majority of states preferred something different.  Michigan's favorite ice cream was "Blue Moon" in 2020.

Or maybe it's because vanilla actually is the most popular flavor in the United States because it's so versatile and you can add other flavors to it.  No matter the reason, it's nice that we have boring old vanilla to comfort us in a year that is anything but boring.
