Don’t Touch This Toxic Foam Spotted in Michigan’s Waters
Summer is just around the corner and as you prepare to head out to the lake or rivers across Michigan this summer there is something you should avoid if you run into.

Foam that is floating on Michigan lakes and rivers might look similar to your bubble bath at home but instead of getting you fresh and clean this foam is potentially filled with harmful chemicals and bacteria that could end up making you or a pet sick.
Avoid Foam On Michigan Lakes And Rivers
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is reminding Michiganders and people that are visiting from out of state to try their best to avoid coming in contact with any foam that is floating on Michigan lakes and rivers.
Sometimes the foam, even if it looks clean can be full of potential harmful bacteria or chemicals including PFAS.
What Are PFAS
PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals that have been used in a wide range of industrial and consumer products since the 1950s.
They're most commonly used in waterproof, stain-resistant and non-stick products.
PFAS have been linked to a number of health issues, including:
- Cancer (kidney, testicular)
- Liver damage
- Endocrine disruption
- Developmental problems in children

What To Do If You Come Into Contact With Foam
The first thing you want to do is to rinse it off you immediately.
If you can take a shower or bath that would be the better option.
You're not the only one that's at risk from this foam, make sure you're pets don't come in contact with it and whatever you do, don't let them drink it.
If you suspect PFAS foam has formed on a lake or river in Michigan you can report it to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE)
