A few weeks ago, news came out that people are selling certain Disney animated classics for thousands of dollars on eBay and places online. It has to be the version of the movie that has a black diamond that says “The Classics” in the middle.

Growing up, we bought and collected every Disney cartoon released; my brother and I knowing one day we’d get the movies for our kids.  Upon hearing the news, I immediately started trying to figure out how I wanted to approach the conversation with my mom to get a look-see at her/our collection.  All I really need is one film to sell (you know, worth $5k or more) and I’d be good.

Well if you’re going to make that awkward call, you better have the highest earning film ready to go, so you ask for just one or possibly two if the first one is her favorite.  So I start doing some research.  I find that a “Beauty and The Beast” was selling for close to $12,000 so of course that’s the video I’m going to ask for, but I needed my second video, just in case. Well as I kept searching, I came across the snopes.com article on these black diamond classics; and that’s when I found out that they really aren’t selling for thousands of dollars.  People are in fact putting them on eBay and places for upwards of $5,000 or more, but not many (if any) are actually selling.

While it is true that a single Black Diamond Collection Beauty and the Beast Disney VHS tape once appears to have sold for $9,000 on eBay, the sale was almost certainly a fluke. Disney Black Diamond Collection VHS tapes are neither rare nor regularly selling for thousands, hundreds, or even tens of dollars. Higher priced listings of the videos on eBay did not attract any active bids.

So, if you thought this was your ticket out of debt or to paradise… keep searching.  Hopefully you didn’t make that awkward call that now has your family a bit afraid that you are going to start snatching collectibles every time you visit.
