A Michigan Dad Ran Back Into a Burning House to Save His Daughter
There are fires that destroy houses, and then there are fires that reveal exactly who someone is.
What’s left of the Biermaker family’s home in Middleville barely looks like a house at all. Wood, furniture, and the little pieces of a life lived there are now piled together outside. The kind of scene that makes your stomach drop before the holidays.
But inside all that devastation is one truth: everyone is alive because of a dad that didn’t hesitate.
The fire broke out around 9 a.m. Sunday. By the time flames were tearing through the home, most of the family had made it outside, but cali Biermaker was still inside.
Her dad, John, was already out of the house when he realized she wasn’t there. His fiancée, Michelle Holsey, shared with WZZM that when things went sideways, there was no hesitation.
He ran back inside through the smoke and flames to find his daughter.
Michelle says he later told her he kept falling as he carried Cali back down, tripping on the stairs, but refusing to let go.
Thanks to her dad's heroic actions, Cali is now recovering at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. John is being treated next door at Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital. Cali suffered burns on about 16.5 percent of her body but is doing well, resting and not in pain. John’s injuries are more severe, but at least everyone will be okay.
Investigators believe the fire may have started in the chimney, possibly after an animal fell inside while the fireplace was in use. It’s a painful reminder of how fast ordinary moments can turn into emergencies.
With Christmas days away, the loss stings even more. But Michelle says they’re keeping things in perspective.
A fundraiser has been started to help the Biermaker family rebuild and recover. It won’t replace the home they lost. But it can help carry them through the weeks ahead. Because this season, their miracle already happened, carried down a staircase by a dad who didn’t think twice.
