Some Christmas gifts come wrapped with bows. Others come wagging into your life when you least expect it.

For one Michigan woman, this holiday season delivered the kind of miracle you can’t plan for. Their dog came home for the holidays after being missing for four years.

Felicia Fritz of Detroit adopted her dog, Toby, as a puppy back in 2018. Like a lot of young curious dogs, he had a habit of wandering. And then one day, he ran off and never came back, which broke Felicia’s heart.

What Felicia didn’t know was that Toby wasn’t gone forever.

At some point after he disappeared, Toby ended up at a Humane Society and was adopted by an older man. He lived in a safe, loving home for nearly two years. When that man became too sick to care for him, Toby was surrendered to Friends of Michigan Animals Rescue.

By then, he had a new name: Ziggy.

“Ziggy” stayed at the rescue for about a year and quietly became one of their longest residents. Staff knew he deserved a home, especially as the holidays approached, so they shared his photos on social media, hoping the right person would see him. And someone did.

Felicia came across the post and felt something. The dog in the photos looked familiar… really familiar. She reached out to the rescue and shared old photos of Toby. His markings matched. The pieces started falling into place.

After an in-person meeting, there was no hesitation. This wasn’t just a lookalike. This was Toby and he and his first owner were finally back together like it was meant to be.

Four years after running away, Toby walked back into the life he started in, right before Christmas. You can see the heartwarming video posted by CBS Detroit below:

It’s the kind of story that reminds you how small the world can be, how powerful a single social media post can be, and how sometimes, the best gifts don’t come from a store. They find their way home.
