The end of the year seems to bring the most charitable spirits out of people. We all love to help others around the Holidays, when we're feeling a little warm in our heart despite the cool air outside. And if you're looking to do some good just before the new year, one of Michigan's cities has been named the neediest in America.

The experts at Wallethub have crunched the numbers to see where the 37 million people in the U.S. that are lacking access to adequate food are living. They found that in 2021, 11.6% of the US population was living in poverty. Unfortunately, a lot of that comes from housing insecurity and the lack of affordable housing. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, more than 580,000 people, many of which are children, had been homeless at one point in January 2020.

Why is Detroit the neediest city in America?

It turns out- Michigan's largest city made the top of the list for neediest city for some pretty obvious reasons including having the second highest adult AND childhood poverty rates in the nation.

Detroit did manage to have a few spots where they didn't make the negative aspects of this list, including having a lower number of homeless and uninsured citizens compared to other cities. However, They came in third when it came to food insecurity and inadequate plumbing options, meaning that health problems are more likely on average for people living in Detroit.

The only other city in the state that made the list was Grand Rapids, only hitting 93rd on the list which feels far from problematic compared to the east side of the state.
