Grand Rapids Looks North for a New Sister City Near Toronto

Grand Rapids might be adding a new sister city that’s close enough to visit with just a day trip.

The city is considering a proposal to form a sister city partnership with Vaughan, Ontario, which is a fast-growing city just north of Toronto near Lake Ontario.

Like Grand Rapids, Vaughan sits close to a Great Lake, lives in the orbit of a much bigger metro, and has grown quickly while trying to keep a strong sense of local identity. (Sound familiar?)

According to Grand Rapids Sister Cities International, the nonprofit that helps manage these partnerships, Vaughan is one of Canada’s fastest-growing and most dynamic cities. The group announced the proposal on Sunday, and it is set to go before the City Commission of the Whole for consideration and a vote on the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 10th.

What is a sister city, and how does it benefit Grand Rapids?

Sister cities are meant to be more than symbolic. They are designed to build long-term relationships through cultural exchange, education, and community connections. That can mean student exchanges, shared programming, business relationships, and the occasional reason to travel somewhere new with a little built-in local connection.

What makes Vaughan especially interesting is how close it actually is. At about a five-hour drive from Grand Rapids, it is close enough to realistically visit without turning it into a major international trip, and you can visit with just a Michigan Real ID so you don’t even need a passport to see it for yourself.

It also sits near Lake Ontario in much the same way Grand Rapids sits near Lake Michigan, which gives the two cities some shared DNA when it comes to climate, water, and regional culture.

Grand Rapids already has six sister cities around the world, including communities in Japan, Poland, Ghana, South Korea, Italy, and Mexico. Adding a Canadian city would bring a different kind of connection. Less far-flung, more familiar, and maybe a little easier to imagine turning into real, ongoing exchanges.

Nothing is official yet. That decision will come with the city commission vote tomorrow, but if Grand Rapids is going to add another sister city having one that feels more like a neighbor than a pen pal makes sense.
