New Drone Plan Could Change How Grand Rapids Handles Parking
The City of Grand Rapids is exploring a high-tech approach to tackling downtown parking challenges, and they want to know what residents think about it.
City officials are considering partnering with two companies to study parking demand, which could include using drones to monitor spaces and, potentially, issue parking tickets in the future.
According to Mobile GR, the current proposal would have drones flying around 300 to 400 feet above downtown, capturing high-resolution images of parking areas over a three-week period. To start, the focus will be on data collection.
However, the technology could eventually be used to spot expired meters, locate abandoned vehicles, or even help identify stolen cars more quickly.
The initiative is designed to help the city better understand how people are using parking downtown and create a more sustainable strategy moving forward.
Paying for street parking in Grand Rapids is already fairly simple thanks to the MOTU app, but city leaders say drone monitoring could improve efficiency and help free up spaces faster.
This will generate revenue that could be reinvested into keeping public spaces clean, safe, and accessible year-round.
Still, not everyone is convinced this is a great idea. Privacy concerns were raised during a July 29 Public Safety Committee meeting, and the city is required to get commission approval for any surveillance equipment under its administrative policy.
The drone project carries an estimated cost of $180,000. Before moving forward, officials want to hear from residents. A public hearing is scheduled for today at 2:00 p.m. in the City Commission Meeting on the 9th floor of City Hall.
Whether you see it as a modern convenience or a step too far, today’s meeting could help shape how Grand Rapids manages parking in the future.
