An early morning fire caused extensive damage to a building in the Wealthy Street commercial corridor.

The Fire Began In The Early Morning Hours

According to FOX 17 News, the first call came in to the Grand Rapids Fire Department at 1:30am, calling units out to the 600 block of Wealthy at the intersection of Henry.

The building houses a bookbinding business, Tatum Bookbinding, and the building was declared a complete loss after a majority of the building collapsed.

The business was across the street from Elk Brewing and next door to a building that contains Dime and Regal Jewelers. No word yet as to whether any part of the Dime and Regal building was damaged during the the blaze, although it appears there isn't.

Firefighters Aided By Warm Weather, Low Winds

GRFD Battalion Chief Eric Freeman told WOOD-TV 8 weather conditions made the blaze easy for crews to battle, as winds were low, temperatures above freezing, and only one side of the building was adjacent to another property.

No one was in the structure at the time of the fire, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Nearby Popular Businesses Were Unscathed

The area is a popular dining block in the Cherry Hill neighborhood. In addition to Elk Brewing and The Winchester, the Donkey Taqueria is directly across the street from where the fire was, and the Royal Diner is also on the corner of Henry and Wealthy.

The fire caused Wealthy to be closed west of Eastern until after 8:00am.
