Fox17 says a new record was set Saturday for the "Empty the Shelters" event held across the state sponsored by the Bissell Pet Foundation.

Officials told Fox17 that 2,103 pets were adopted Saturday while Bissell Pet Foundations paid the adoption fees at around 75 shelters around Michigan.

Erica Cederquist, of the Bissell Pet Foundation, told Fox17:

“By clearing the shelters, we make room for new pets to move into these non-kill shelters. So, every pet adopted actually saves two lives so it’s very important for the pets and it’s very important for the community.”

According to the Bissell Pet Foundation, over 2.7 million pets are euthanized yearly. So the “Empty the Shelters” helps drop that number and increase adoption rates across the state.  The press release also says that 96.9% of the time, the newly adopted pets remained in their new forever home.
