Founders beer fans will have a new session IPA to try soon: Scarlet Dawn IPA.

According to the Grand Rapids-based brewery, Scarlet Dawn IPA is brewed with an array of malts to provide a "deep crimson hue" and a spectrum of hops that lend a "floral aroma and keep the bitterness to a minimum". The new beer is 5.1% ABV.

Now, if like me, you're not really sure what the difference is between a "session" IPA and a regular IPA (India Pale Ale), here's an explanation from Coalition Brewing:

The concept of a “session” beer comes from the British tradition of sitting down for a drink with friends in a pub, and in this cultural context, the idea isn’t to have one or two, it’s to have “a few”.

The aim is not to get drunk; on the contrary, it’s to stay sober and remain capable of holding a conversation, in which case, it’s preferable to avoid imbibing anything too strong – and a session beer is one that’s brewed with this in mind.

So basically, a session IPA has a lower alcohol percentage. Founders' All Day IPA, another session IPA is 4.7% ABV, in comparison, their Centennial IPA is 7.2% ABV.

Scarlet Dawn IPA will be available in 6-pack cans, 15-pack cans, and on draft in Founders' Grand Rapids and Detroit taprooms on August 18. It will be distributed nationwide in October.

Founders also recently announced another new beer: Velvet Rush, a bourbon barrel-aged brown ale with notes of coffee, chocolate and vanilla extract will be available in September.
