Gordie Howe Is Penalized By Officials In Red Wings, Senators Game
Officials mistake players numbers all the time it happens in every sport. It is one thing if that number is on the ice. It's another when it is the number of one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
According to the Detroit Free Press, in the recent Red Wings and Senators game, the officials made a mistake and announced a penalty on Detroit number 9.
The only problem is nobody in Detroit wears number 9 as it was the number of the late Gordie Howe. The number is retired and Gordie last played for the Wings in 1971. He passed away back in 2016.
It was a surprise to hear it called and if you watched the broadcast with Ken Daniels and Darren Elliott they commented on the mistake.
The penalty was eventually announced on being on Anthony Mantha before they gave it to Wade Megan for hooking.
It seemed to be a rough night for the officials in Ottawa, but for that moment it was a nice shout out to one of the greatest to ever play the game.
