Egg prices are high and there's no signs of them coming down anytime soon.

The reason behind the massive price hike is the bird flu outbreak that started back in 2022.

If a chicken farm has even one bird test positive then the entire flock is killed to try and stop the spread of the virus. Since 2022 over 145 million chickens, turkeys and others birds have been killed since the outbreak started.

but after looking into it I found out that you can apply for a backyard chicken permit.

The first thing you'll need to do is create a Citizen Access account.

Your property will also have to meet specific criteria to have backyard chickens.

Some of the requirements include:

  • Be at least 3,800 square feet (0.087 acres) in area
  • Coop cannot be taller than 8 feet
  • Coop cannot exceed 6 square feet per chicken
  • You can see all the criteria by clicking here.

If you meet all of the criteria there is still one possible thing that could prevent this from happening, your neighbors. They can cause your application to be denied.

I shared all of this information with my wife Lindsey and unfortunately she shut the idea down immediately, I guess she doesn't want us to save money and have our own eggs.
