The Drug Enforcement Agency says that More than 107,000 people lost their lives to a drug overdose in 2023, with nearly 70 percent of those deaths attributed to opioids such as fentanyl.

The Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office says it recorded 71 overdose deaths in 2024, 30 (42%) of which involved fentanyl.

GRPD Seize Enough Fentanyl To Kill Everyone In Grand Rapids

On Wednesday, March 5th the Grand Rapids Police Department Vice Unit conducted several drug raids with one of them seizing the largest amount of Fentanyl ever for the department.

The recorded breaking amount weighed just over 1lb and was found at Wimbledon Apartments in Grandville. Police arrested and charged 53-year-old Darrell Mitchell with possession with the intent to distribute.

GRPD Deputy Chief Mike Maycroft explained just how deadly this much Fentanyl is saying:

"Five hundred grams of fentanyl is a substantial amount, Its potential harm could be very, very immense. For context, a lethal dose of fentanyl is as small as 2 milligrams. … This much fentanyl had the potential to kill every resident in the city of Grand Rapids and Grandville — up to 250,000 people."
