Last night, a seemingly desperate mother dropped her 16-month-old daughter off at a Grand Rapids Fire Department station.

According to WZZM, Grand Rapids Police are reporting that the child was taken to the fire station on Kalamazoo Ave. around 10:00 pm Wednesday.

Michigan does have a Safe Delivery of Newborns Act. The act allows parents to drop off  a child less than 72 hours old to a fire station or a number of other safe locations. The state does not, however, have such a law in place for older children.

Police say the child was taken to the hospital for evaluation and is now in custody of Kids First. Child Protective Services is handling the child's case.
