
Blast Off: These GRCC Students Are Competing To Send A Special Meal Into Space
The mission of the fictional sci-fi show Star Trek is to "boldly go where no man has gone before". But, the mission of these Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) Students is a little more humble. They're just trying to boldly cook something no person has ever eaten in space.
Why are they doing it? They're competing in the NASA HUNCH competition, where culinary teams from across the country are competing in hopes to send their own meal into space.
A team of incredible students will be representing the GRCC culinary program in April and competing against other teams from around the country for a chance to send a meal they made to the International Space Station. The GRCC Raiders Fuel culinary team has made it to the top 10, and will be competing on April 20 in Houston against nine other teams.
The GRCC Raiders Fuel culinary team started working on the meal that they have been competing with back in September of last year. The next step was when they competed/cooked for 20 judges and guests at the Grand Rapids Public Museum during a preliminary round, that has lead them to the next step in their competition.
It is the fourth year GRCC culinary students and faculty are competing in the NASA HUNCH competition, and they're hoping this is the year they finally win. They've gotten close in the past- The 2019-2020 team also made it to the finals, finishing second in the competition.
