High Water Levels Further Delay Grand Haven Pier Repair

Those looking forward to hitting the pier in Grand Haven this summer are going to have to wait even longer...The Grand Haven Tribune reports that Lake Michigan’s near-record water levels will delay the project.

It's about six inches higher than it was around this time last year, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Area Engineer Tom O’Bryan.

Resurfacing of the pier is expected to start in May and take approximately 75 days... but construction officials say that any amount of surface water will interfere with the project.

Pier resurfacing was originally though to be completed by the Coast Guard Festival this year, but now officials say now it is looking more like October 2018.

Work on the catwalk can't start until the resurfacing is complete.

Save the Catwalk chairperson Erin Turrell told the Grand Haven Tribune,

“Unfortunately, Mother Nature has pushed back our plans to have the catwalk back by 2018, but I’m confident that we can count on celebrating a newly installed catwalk in spring 2019."

Work on the Grand Haven pier began in summer of 2016, and was initially expected to take a year. Last summer, structural problems further delayed progress on the project.
