New Podcast Investigates Michigan Man's Mysterious Disappearance

In 2008, a 35-year-old man from West Michigan suddenly and mysteriously vanished from the Upper Peninsula.

A new podcast from the Detroit Free Press is exploring the case.

Derrick Henagan Missing in Michigan

According to Derrick Henagan's missing page, he was born in St. Joseph, Mich., in 1973. As an adult, he lived in Hartford and worked selling cars, and at one time was employed by Harold Zeigler Automotive Group in Kalamazoo.

In the winter of 2007-2008, the father of two with a third child on the way, moved to a remote area in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Wood TV 8 reported that Henagan was reported missing on Aug. 7, 2008 after leaving a friend's home in Lakefield Township, east of Newberry, in Luce County.

At the time, police said he was on his way to meet his girlfriend in the woods. He did not make that meeting and no one has seen or heard from him since.

Witnesses shared that Henagan had made numerous phone calls prior to his disappearance, possibly to arrange a ride to Hartford in Van Buren County, where his family lived.

According to the Charley Project, Henagan was declared legally dead in 2016, and his case has been ruled a homicide.

The Detroit Free Press has launched a new podcast, "Where Secrets Go to Die", diving into Henagan's disappearance.

Veteran Free Press reporter John Wisely is investigating the case.

According to the Free Press, Wisely says,

When I figured out what this story was all about, I couldn’t walk away from it... You’ve got this unsolved murder in the middle of nowhere that fell through the cracks. You’ve got this online mythology around the case and you’ve got some serious questions about the cops. I’ve spent a lot of time talking to the people in and around it, and I want them to be heard.
