Michigan – Here’s When You Can Watch the 2023 Perseid Meteor Shower

One of the biggest meteor showers of the year is about to take place and Michiganders should have no problem watching the late-night show.

The Perseid meteor shower is a late summer meteor shower that offers one of the best shooting star displays of the year.

As long as weather permits, Michiganders should get a clear shot of the spectacular annual event.

When is the Perseid Meteor Shower?

The annual Perseid meteor shower is active from mid-July to late August. However, the best time to look at the late-night sky will be on August 12 and 13th. This is when the Perseids will be producing its peak rate of meteors.

An observer with a quick eye under a dark sky might typically see more than 60 Perseids per hour between midnight and dawn. Typically, during an overnight watch, the Perseids are capable of producing a number of bright, flaring and fragmenting meteors, which leave fine trains which can persist for several seconds or more in their wake.

How to Watch the Perseid Meteor Shower

You don't need any special equipment or anything like that. The meteor shower will be visible as long as the sky is clear. The only thing you'll really need to do is find a secluded viewing spot, away from the city lights. You really just need to try and get away from any light pollution.

The Perseid meteor shower will peak when the moon will be only 10% full which will make it a lot easier to see.

If you're camping in Northern Michigan, you will have the best seat in the house.
