Soon You Might Not Be Able to Get to Mackinac Island
The Mackinac Island ferry drama is getting worse. It’s not just about ticket prices anymore. It might actually decide whether you can even get there at all in a couple of years.
Why Mackinac Island Ferry Service Could Stop
A few weeks ago, we were talking about how ferry prices were going up, and how the city was basically like, “Alright, show us the numbers.” Because when one company owns both ferry services, it starts to feel like you don’t really have a choice, and people were already feeling squeezed. The company that owns both ferry lines is now saying that if they can’t come to an agreement with the city, they could straight-up stop running ferries to Mackinac Island when their contract expires in 2027 according to WJRT.
Getting to Mackinac Island Could Get More Complicated
And that’s not a small threat when you remember there are no roads to the island. You either take a boat or a plane, and that’s it. And we’re talking about more than a million visitors every year.

So now this whole thing has turned into a legal fight, with a federal judge basically stepping in and saying, “Hey, maybe don’t blow this up completely?” Meanwhile, Michigan’s Attorney General is also jumping in, trying to get both sides to work it out before this turns into a full-on mess.
What Happens If Mackinac Island Ferry Service Stops in 2027
Because let’s be real for a second. Nobody actually believes Mackinac Island is just going to sit there with no way for people to get to it. That’s not happening. But what could happen is fewer options, higher prices, or a last-minute scramble to figure something out.
