There’s a brand-new face at John Ball Zoo, and this one’s making quite the splash.

Late Wednesday evening, Sept. 3, the zoo welcomed a baby pygmy hippo into the world, its very first born at the John Ball Zoo.

The calf was born to first-time mom Penelope, and both are said to be doing well as they bond behind the scenes.

While the little hippo isn’t ready to make a public appearance just yet, zoo officials are celebrating this as a major milestone. With fewer than 2,500 pygmy hippos estimated to be left in the wild, each successful birth represents hope for the survival of this endangered species.

For now, Penelope and her newborn will remain tucked away from the crowds, giving them time to build a strong connection before being introduced to visitors. However, excitement is already rippling through the community as this little calf marks a significant step forward in conservation efforts.

It may be a while before guests can officially meet the calf in person, but one thing is certain: West Michigan is already head-over-heels for its newest zoo resident. (And if she decides to be a spicy little social media queen, we are here to cheer her on.)
