I remember being a young kid and hearing stories about the Loch Ness Monster.

Known as Nessie this mythical creature was rumored to be living in Loch Ness located in the Scottish Highlands.

For years she was described as having a long large neck with one or possible two humps on its back that would pop up through the water.

Over the years there have been many people that have tried to prove that the Loch Ness doesn't exist.

People have gone into the waters with advanced radar and sonar and were not able to find the monster.

For a long time there has been a supposed photo of Nessie but in 1994 it was revealed that the photo was just a plastic and wooden head attached to a toy submarine.

Part of me wants to hold out hope that Nessie is real but the science appears to say otherwise.

A Monster In Lake Erie

Stories of a similar water monster go all the way back to 1793, when a French captain reported being chased by a long, serpentine creature near Middle Bass Island.

Some other reported sightings of a Lake Erie Monster include:

  • 1817: The crew of a schooner reported a 30-40 foot dark serpent. Later that year, another crew saw a copper-colored serpent estimated at 60 feet, which they shot at with no visible effect. A third incident involved French settlers near Toledo who found a large, sturgeon-like creature with arms on the beach.
  • 1892: the entire crew of a ship bound from Buffalo, New York, to Toledo, Ohio, in July 1892 saw a large area of water ahead of them churned up and foaming. As they approached they saw "a huge sea serpent" that appeared to be "wrestling about in the waters, as if fighting with an unseen foe."
  • There have also been some sightings of the alleged monster in 1969, the 1980s and in 1993.

While the existence of a Lake Erie monster has not been proven you might want to keep an eye out next time you find yourself near that body of water.
