Could Lake Michigan Really Get A New Name?
If you've ever heard the saying, "There's no such thing as a dumb question," then you might appreciate the question I recently asked myself: Could Lake Michigan get a new name?
I thought about that being a possibility after the recent name change by President Trump, who changed "The Gulf of Mexico" to the "The Gulf of America".

I honestly didn't even know it could be changed that easily.
Could Lake Michigan Really Get A New Name?
In reaction to President Trump renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, the Governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, jokingly announced some changes he was making, including changing the name of Lake Michigan to Lake Illinois.
In his "announcement" he also went on to say that Illinois will be annexing Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Personally, I'm cool with giving Green Bay to Canada if they want it.
All kidding aside, it appears that changing the name of Lake Michigan might not be that easy unless you're the president.

What Would It Take To Change The Name of Lake Michigan
The first reason the name change would be hard to do is that Lake Michigan is bordered by Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana so any name change would require agreement among these four states.
Along the same lines, federal approval would most likely be needed since the lake is part of a shared natural resource that has interstate and federal agreements.

I don't think Lake Michigan will have its name officially changed anytime soon, but I wouldn't be surprised if one day Lake Ontario randomly becomes Lake America.
