Why Michigan Beachgoers Shouldn’t Dig Holes In The Sand

From the Great Lakes to the over 11,000 inland lakes there are so many places to cool off and relax with your feet in the sand and a drink in your hand.
But while having fun playing in the sand there is something that you should avoid doing because in just a few seconds a moment of fun can turn into a dangerous or possibly deadly situation.

The Danger Of Digging Holes On The Beach

Sometimes it's to bury someone up to their neck for a funny picture.
Or other times people try to dig down and make a little tunnel.
While this might seem like harmless fun, things could take a tragic turn in an instant.

The reason you shouldn't dig holes in the sand at beaches is because the sand underneath is often unstable and there is a possibility of it collapsing on you leaving you trapped under all that weight of the sand.
Last year a 12-year-old boy was hospitalized after digging a five foot hole in the sand at silver lake dunes and it collapsed on him.
Thankfully a bunch of people were nearby and were able to dig him out.
