Deputy Taylor Dibble was dispatched to the scene and found the sealed bag with one rabbit's mouth and nose visible, and a knot tied around its neck.

Using a key, Dibble carefully ripped open the bag, which had been tied with multiple tight knots, to provide the rabbits with oxygen.

In total, eight baby rabbits, estimated to be 1-2 weeks old, were rescued from the bag.

Tragically, one of the rabbits had already died by the time they arrived at the Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) sanctuary in Romeo.

The surviving seven rabbits were dehydrated and close to hypothermia, but DAWG staff were able to stabilize them with the help of an incubator.

The rabbits will be cared for at the sanctuary until they are old enough to be released back into the wild.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham praised Deputy Dibble's quick actions, stating

"The Macomb County Sheriff's Office takes situations of animal abuse and mistreatment very seriously. I commend Deputy Taylor Dibble for diligently answering the call and giving these animals a chance at life."

Authorities are now searching for the suspect, described as a younger to middle-aged white male driving a small red Chevrolet car.
