I had my first child at the end of 2023, and it's a stressful life change when you bring a little one into your life. There's a lot to learn, and a lot that can go wrong along the way. That's why anyone willing to help new parents have a successful first year, is a saint.

West Michigan families can feel a little safer thanks to six local emergency response agencies that have earned certification in safe sleep practices, thanks to a program launched by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) in 2022.

This initiative is crucial because these agencies often interact with families and help ensure a safe sleeping environment for children. The Grand Rapids Fire Department led the way by becoming the first certified department in July 2022.

Since then, four more agencies in Kent County have joined, collaborating with the Kent County Health Department's Infant Safe Sleep Program.

The Caledonia Fire Department, Plainfield Fire Department, Wyoming Fire Department, Alpine Township Fire Department, and Coopersville/Polkton Fire Department are among the certified agencies committed to promoting safe sleep practices.

Statewide, a total of 17 emergency medical service agencies and fire departments have received certification. Over 800 providers have been trained, reaching more than 160 families, according to MDHHS.

Each certified department designates a pediatric champion responsible for leading the program's efforts within their agency. This ensures that all team members are equipped with the necessary resources and training.

Additionally, these agencies have implemented resources and policies to assist families in need of a safe sleep space for infants.

Safe sleep practices are essential for infants, both during naps and nighttime. According to MDHHS and The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), babies should always be placed on their backs to sleep, in their own sleep space, such as a crib, bassinet, or pack and play, with a firm mattress. These simple steps can significantly reduce the risk of sleep-related accidents for infants.

A big shout out to the first responders here in Michigan who are taking that extra step to help parents in need with their newborns.
