President Donald Trump made the request after Turning Point USA Founder Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday, September 10.

Kirk kicked off his "American Comeback Tour" at Utah Valley University and was answering some questions from people in the crowd when he was shot and killed.

At the time of this article being posted police have released a person of interest in the shooting and say the suspect remains at large.

Why Flags Are Flown At Half-Staff

If you're wondering why flags are flown at half-staff it's to honor a period of mourning.

This can be ordered by the U.S. President, a state governor, or the mayor of the District of Columbia.

Flags are flown at half-staff for the deaths of government officials, military members, or first responders, as well as for national tragedies or national days of remembrance.

For example, flags were expected to be flown at half-staff on Thursday September 11.

The day is now called Patriots Day, which commemorates the lives of those who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Virginia, and those who died when the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania.
