Michigan Police Chase After 12 Year Old Joyriding On Forklift
In an unusual incident in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a 12-year-old boy led police on an hour-long chase in a stolen forklift.
The chase began around 6:45 p.m. on a Saturday when police were called to Forsythe Middle School following a report of a stolen construction vehicle.
What Construction Vehicle Was Stolen?
The vehicle, a Construction Genie GTH-636 Telehandler equipped with a forklift and weighing up to 35,000 pounds, was found being driven south through the city.
Who Took The Forklift On A Joyride?
The boy, who remains unnamed due to his age, led officers on a pursuit at speeds between 15 and 20 mph.
Dashcam footage showed the boy knocking into parked cars and jumping red lights. During the chase, the boy struck approximately 10 parked vehicles.
The chase ended around 8 p.m. when the boy finally stopped the forklift near M-14 and Gotfredson Road, on the outskirts of neighboring Detroit and around 10 miles from Forsythe Middle School.
How Did The Kid Steal The Forklift?
The police later discovered that the forklift had been left unlocked with a key hidden in the cab.
The boy was taken into custody and sent to a juvenile detention center.
No one was injured during the incident
Ann Arbor Police Release Statement
The Ann Arbor Police Department said in a statement:
"This was a very dangerous situation that could’ve easily ended with serious injuries"
The incident remains an active and ongoing criminal investigation.
