The officer who was shot this morning in Saginaw County has been identified as Jeff Koenig. Officer Koenig is a 16 year veteran of the Saginaw Township Police Department.

Original Story:

A suspect who reportedly shot and injured a Mid-Michigan police officer during a traffic stop early Tuesday morning is still on the loose. WNEM-TV reports that it happened around 2:00 am in Saginaw County's Kochville Township.

An officer with the Saginaw Township Police Department was approaching a vehicle on foot that he had pulled over. The person inside that vehicle allegedly fired a shot at the officer and then drove off. The officer was struck in the face by the bullet and was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. At around 4:30 am Tuesday, the hospital reported that the officer's condition had improved and that he was in stable condition.

Authorities currently have no description of the suspect or the vehicle. Saginaw Township police do not believe there is a danger to the public as they investigate and try to locate the suspect.

Police Chief Don Pussehl told WNEM-TV this was the first time in his 15 years with the department that one of his officers was shot during a traffic stop.
