If you’ve uttered a string of curse words over a crater-sized pothole while swerving across a Michigan road, you’re not the only one.

A contest from our state government offers Michiganders a chance to win up to $758 to cover some of our pothole-related car repairs.

The “Pothole Payback” contest is the latest effort from the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association (MITA) to bring attention to the sorry state of our roads, and to give a little relief to drivers who’ve already paid the price.

While it was announced a few months ago, they are now encouraging and reminding people that they will be picking the first round of winners for May this week, and more winners for June soon.

Why are they giving people in Michigan $758 for pothole repairs?

The amount, $758, isn’t just a random figure. That’s the average amount Michigan drivers spend each year due to vehicle damage caused by poor road conditions according to numbers crunched by experts. While some cities the average price is a lot higher, $758 will at least get you started in the right direction.

The contest is running through June, and each month, a few unlucky (but now potentially lucky) drivers will be selected to receive reimbursement for their pothole woes.

If you’ve already shelled out for a new tire or bent rim, or just recently limped home with a new rattle, you can still enter. You’ll need to submit your story, a photo of the damage, and proof of the repair costs. From there, MITA will choose winners.

And if you have a bill you could use a reimbursement for, you still have a chance to win. (No need to resubmit for June’s drawing if you have already) Check out the website for the contest to get more details, and to enter for your chance to win.
