Anyone who's ever gotten a speeding ticket in the Mitten State may beg to differ...

But a new study has found Michigan to be among the states most lenient on speeding.

According to Wallethub, Michigan ranks 13th in the nation for going easy on speeders.

To determine their ranking of the Strictest and Most Lenient States on Speeding and Reckless Driving, Wallethub compared driving laws in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

They compared factors like whether speeding is automatically considered reckless driving, the average increase in cost of insurance after one speeding ticket, minimum and maximum jail times, and cost of fines.

Here are Michigan's stats, as broken down by Patch:

Speeding and Reckless Driving Penalties in Michigan (1=Strictest; 25=Avg, 50= Most Lenient):

  • 26th – Speeding Automatically Considered Reckless Driving
  • 49th – Average Increase in Cost of Insurance After One Speeding Ticket
  • 20th – How Much Do Speeding Ticket Points Count Toward a Suspension
  • 10th – Minimum Jail Time (first reckless offense)
  • 13th – Minimum Jail Time (second reckless offense)
  • 36th – Maximum Fine (second reckless offense)

What state was found to be the strictest on speeders? Delaware.

Texas came in as most lenient on speeders.
