These Rare Rocks Are Hiding in Plain Sight on Michigan’s Shores
If you’ve ever strolled a Lake Michigan beach and spotted someone hunched over with a bucket or a flashlight, there’s a good chance they’re rock hunting.
You may have not known this, but Michigan is one of the best places in the US to find some pretty incredible, rare and beautiful stones, many of which can be collected on public land for free.

Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just want a fun outdoor activity with the family that’s free, here are five of the most popular stones you can hunt for in Michigan, and exactly where to find them.
What are some of the best stones to hunt in Michigan, and where can I find them?
1. Petoskey Stones
These fossilized corals are Michigan’s official state stone and a favorite among collectors. They have a honeycomb-like pattern and a smooth finish when polished. You’ll find them along Lake Michigan beaches, especially near Petoskey, Charlevoix, and at Fisherman’s Island State Park.
2. Yooperlites
These dull gray rocks light up a fiery orange under UV light thanks to the mineral sodalite.
They were only recently discovered and have exploded in popularity. The best place to search for them is at night with a UV flashlight along the Lake Superior shoreline, especially near Brimley and Whitefish Point.
3. Lake Superior Agates
Known for their rich red and orange bands, these agates formed over a billion years ago.
They’re commonly found on beaches along Lake Superior, particularly near Grand Marais and Whitefish Point.
4. Greenstone (Chlorastrolite)
This is Michigan’s state gemstone and one of the rarest stones in the country.
It has a green, turtle-shell pattern and can be found in the Keweenaw Peninsula, especially near Copper Harbor. (Note: It’s illegal to collect on Isle Royale.)
5. Charlevoix Stones
These beauties are a close cousin to the Petoskey stone.
Charlevoix stones have smaller coral patterns and can be found in the same areas as their cousins, including Petoskey, Charlevoix, and nearby beaches along Lake Michigan.
