Michigan Ties Vaccinations To Covid Restrictions
In an address to the state this morning Governor Whitmer urged Michiganders to get vaccinated and help return the state to normalcy.
We always knew there was going to be a moment when the supply would eclipse demand, and that’s where we are. We expected it to be coming … around this time, so things are proceeding as we anticipated. But it also, I think, reaffirms for all of us how important it is that every one of us does our part to educate our co-workers or family or friends or neighbors to help people go and access a vaccine, and for employers to ensure they are encouraging their workforce as well. -Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer
As part of today's press conference the governor, along with Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist and MDHHS Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh S. Khaldun, announced vaccination goals that would be tied to the easing of Covid-19 restrictions in the state.
- 14 days after 55% of the state's residents (about 4.5 million Michiganders) are vaccinated with their first dose, the state will lift the work from home mandate
- 14 days after 60% of the state's residents (about 4.9 million Michiganders) are vaccinated vaccinated with their first dose, the state will increase indoor capacity for sporting events, banquet centers, and similar facilities to 25%. Also, gyms would see an increase to 50% capacity and curfews will be lifted at bars and restaurants.
- 14 days after 65% of the state's residents (about 5.3 million Michiganders) are vaccinated with their first dose, limits on social gatherings will be relaxed and ALL indoor capacity restrictions will be lifted.
- 14 days after 70% of the state's residents (about 5.7 million Michiganders) are vaccinated with their first dose, facemasks will no longer be mandated by the MDHHS. Also, the state will no longer restrict gatherings of any type.
It is hoped that after we reach 70% vaccination across Michigan, that the state will no longer need to issue health guidance "unless unanticipated circumstances arise."
