The company analyzed winter driving fatalities, the fatality rate adjusted for vehicle miles traveled and the states with the best and worst drivers to determine which states are the most dangerous for winter driving.

Michigan's overall winter driving danger rank was number 1. 162 winter driving fatalities occurred in Michigan over the last 3 years. MoneyGeek's ranking of the safest drivers puts Michigan drivers as #8 in the nation for driving safety. This means that Michiganders are pretty safe drivers, although Mother Nature often has other plans.

Winter Driving Tips:

  • Make sure you're prepared by gathering the Winter driving essentials like an ice scarper, blanket, jumper cables, car washer fluid, a flashlight and flares.

  • Fill up on gas. Make sure you have at least half a tank to prevent condensation and fuel line freeze.

  • Learn how to get out of a snowbank. Put the car in the lowest possible gear and make sure 4 wheel drive is turned on if you have that option.

  • If you slide, counter steer and pump the brakes.
