Rising Temps in West Michigan Could Mean Costly Basement Damage
If you’ve lived through a West Michigan winter, you know the drill. We dig out. We bundle up. We complain about the cold.
And then, just like that, the temperatures climb above freezing for a few days and all that snow we’ve been staring at for weeks starts to melt, and that’s the part that makes me nervous.
With temperatures expected to stay above freezing for several days, all of that snow has to go somewhere. And in West Michigan, that runoff has a sneaky way of finding the lowest point possible. Unfortunately, that is often your basement.
When snow melts quickly, the ground can still be frozen underneath which means water cannot soak in properly. Instead, it pools around foundations and seeps into cracks, window wells, and crawl spaces. What starts as a little damp spot can turn into standing water faster than most of us realize.
And once water gets in, thats when your problems can multiply.
Beyond structural damage, water intrusion can create serious health concerns by silently soaking into carpet and drywall. If water sits for 24 to 48 hours, mold growth can begin. And not only is it unpleasant, it’s expensive. And it is not good for your home or your investment. That’s why this is the time of year when homeowners should be actively checking their basements and crawl spaces.
What should I look for in my basement after the snow thaws?
Look for dark spots on walls or floors. Pay attention to white powdery residue on concrete, which can signal moisture issues. If you notice a musty odor, that can be an early sign of mold growth. Also check for cracks in your foundation, discoloration in drywall, or new cracking in floors and walls. All of it can be affected during freeze and thaw cycles like the one we are heading into.
It is easy to focus on the relief of warmer temperatures. After weeks of cold, 35 or 40 degrees feels like a gift. But in West Michigan, a winter thaw can bring its own set of headaches. Keeping an eye on your basement now could save you thousands in water damage repairs later.
