New Affordable Housing Apartment Complex Planned For West Side Of Grand Rapids

A brand new 38-unit affordable housing apartment complex has been planned for Grand Rapids' West Side.

Genesis Non-Profit Housing Corporation is hoping to build their new apartment complex across 3 lots located between Leonard St. NW and Courtney St. NW.  The lots are currently zoned differently, one being low density residential and the other zoned traditional business, which is acting as a roadblock for the developer.

Genesis has requested a vote to rezone the disputed lots and the Grand Rapids City Planning Commission is expected to vote on that measure later this month.

If the rezoning is passed and the apartment complex is constructed, all of the apartments will be for people who meet certain income criteria.  According to the proposal to the city, 15 apartments are reserved for people with special needs who make 30% of the average median income of the area and the other 23 apartments will be for people earning 40-60% the average median income.

The apartments will be either 664 sq. ft. or 950 sq. ft. depending on whether it has one or two bedrooms.  Each apartment will include a kitchen and in-unit laundry.  And according to an article by MiBiz, the apartments will renovate and utilize a funeral home built in 1931 as a community room and management offices.
