Brand New Park with Hammock Grove, Play Area Coming to Southwest Grand Rapids
In the past few years we've seen A LOT of improvements to Grand Rapids' parks, thanks to a voter-approved millage. Well, an entirely new park is being planned a southwest GR!
The City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department says its in the process of acquiring land for a new park space in the Roosevelt Park Neighborhood.
The site is at the corner of Rumsey St. and Caesar E. Chavez Ave.
The City worked with the surrounding community to understand what they wanted in a new neighborhood park.
Proposed elements at the site include:
- Flexible seating amenities
- Neighborhood identity elements
- Multi-use gathering spaces, lighting, and play features.
One proposed element is a hammock grove, which will include permanent hammocks and the option to bring your own hammock. (Another Grand Rapids park, Brigg's Park got a hammock grove last year.)
Play area would include an inclusive nest swing on poured-in play rubberized surfacing.
This spring, the parks department will again reach out to the community for input on the new park's name, historical elements, and shelter options.
Construction is set to begin once additional funding through grants and partnerships is secured.
